THC Doritos? Why Copycat Edibles Are a Bad Bet (and What a Chef Makes Instead)

If you landed here, you probably searched for something like "THC Doritos," "weed Takis" or "hot Cheetos edibles." I get it. A salty, crunchy edible beats another gummy. I'm a chef, and I built a whole chip line around that idea.

But before you buy a bag that looks like a famous snack with a weed leaf slapped on it, here's what you should know.

What "THC Doritos" Actually Are

The big chip brands don't make THC chips. Not Doritos, not Takis, not Cheetos, not Fritos. When you see a bag that looks like one of them with "600mg THC" printed on it, it's a copycat made by someone else, usually with no name, no address and no way to check what's inside.

Sometimes it's store-bought chips sprayed with an infusion and sealed in a look-alike bag. Sometimes it's not even clear what the THC is. Either way, the people who made it are borrowing a brand that kids recognize on sight.

Why Copycat Edibles Are a Bad Bet

1. They look exactly like kids' snacks

A study published in Pediatrics found that reported cases of children under 6 eating cannabis edibles rose from just over 200 in 2017 to 3,054 in 2021, a 1,375% increase. A bag that looks like a lunchbox snack makes that kind of mistake easy.

2. Federal regulators are already cracking down

In July 2023, the FDA and FTC sent warning letters to six companies selling THC edibles in packaging that copied Doritos, Cheetos and Nerds. Copycat bags put the seller at risk of enforcement and trademark lawsuits, and they put you at risk of buying from someone who won't be around next month.

3. You can't trust the dose

"600mg" on a knockoff bag tells you nothing about how much THC is in each chip or whether it's spread evenly. One handful could be nothing. The next could be way too much. If you've ever wondered why edibles hit differently every time, uneven mixing is a big reason. Here's why edibles feel different every time.

What to Look For Instead

  • An original brand with a real maker behind it, not a copy of a snack you'd find in a vending machine.
  • Clear milligrams per bag and per serving, printed on the label.
  • Lab results you can actually look up. Ours are on the Lab Results page.
  • 21+ only, sold and labeled for adults.

What a Chef Makes Instead: Lit Chips

My rule is simple: if it's only good because it has cannabis in it, you've already lost. Every bag of Lit Chips has to be a great bag of chips first. Each bag has 100mg of hemp-derived Delta 9 THC, labeled as 2 servings of 50mg, and the new bags are twice as big as before.

Find the flavor that matches what you were craving:

Can't decide? The Snack Sampler gets you five flavors in one box. Or see the whole lineup in THC Chips & Weed Chips: The Lit Chips Lineup.

Start Low, Store Smart

Start with a few chips, wait, then decide. Effects vary with tolerance, metabolism and what you've eaten. Here's the full guide on how to dose THC chips.

And whatever you buy, keep it where kids and pets can't reach it. Here's how: keeping THC snacks away from kids.
