Halloween Edible Safety: How to Keep THC Snacks Away From Kids
Every October, the same worry goes around: what if THC edibles end up in a trick-or-treat bag? The good news is that it's rare. The more realistic risk is closer to home — kids or pets finding an adult's edibles in the kitchen, a purse, or a candy bowl. A few simple habits prevent nearly all of it.
As a chef who makes infused cereals and snacks, Chef Matt takes this seriously. Edibles that taste great are exactly why they need to be stored like medicine, not like snacks.
Why Halloween Is a Higher-Risk Time
- There's more candy and snack food around the house than usual.
- Parties mean more guests, more bags, and more open containers.
- Kids are excited and less likely to ask before eating something.
- Many edibles look like regular treats once they're out of the package.
The Adult Checklist
- Store edibles locked and out of reach. A lockbox or a high cabinet works. Never keep them in the pantry next to regular snacks.
- Keep them in the original package. Child-resistant, clearly labeled packaging is your first line of defense.
- Never mix edibles into a candy bowl or party snack table. Even as a joke.
- Watch your bags and coats at parties. Purses and jackets are where kids find things.
- Label anything you've cooked yourself. If you make infused food at home, label it clearly and store it separately.
- Tell other adults in the house. Everyone should know what's off-limits.
Checking Your Kids' Candy
After trick-or-treating, sort through the haul before anyone eats it. Toss anything that's unwrapped, in unfamiliar packaging, or has a cannabis leaf, "THC," "Delta-9," or milligram amounts on the label.
If a Child or Pet Eats an Edible
Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (available 24/7) or 911 right away, even if they seem fine. Symptoms can take time to show up. Keep the package so you can tell them what was eaten and how much. For pets, call your vet or an animal poison control line.
