How to Dose THC Edibles: A Milligram Guide for Every Experience Level
More milligrams doesn't mean a better experience — it usually just means a rougher one if you get it wrong. Dosing edibles correctly is the single biggest factor in whether your experience is enjoyable or uncomfortable. Here's a practical framework broken down by experience level.
This is one part of our full Complete Beginner's Guide to Cannabis Edibles — read that first if you're brand new to edibles.
Why dosing edibles is different from smoking
With smoking or vaping, you feel effects within minutes and can naturally stop when you've had enough. Edibles don't work that way — the delay between eating and feeling anything (see our onset timing guide) means it's very possible to take more before the first dose has even kicked in. This is the number one cause of uncomfortable edible experiences, and it's entirely avoidable with the right approach.
The golden rule
Start low. Go slow. Wait it out. Always wait a minimum of 2 hours before considering a second dose, even if you don't feel anything yet.
Dosing by experience level
First-timers: 2.5mg – 5mg THC
If you've never had an edible before, start here — even if you're a regular smoker. Inhaled and edible THC affect the body differently, and many experienced smokers are surprised by how strong a "normal" edible dose feels. At this level, expect a mild, functional effect: light relaxation, subtle mood lift, minimal impairment.
Occasional users: 5mg – 10mg THC
If you've tried edibles a few times and know how your body responds, this range is a comfortable middle ground — noticeable effects without being overwhelming. Most of our single-serving gummies and chip bags land in this range.
Regular users: 10mg – 20mg THC
Users with an established tolerance often find this range delivers a fuller, more immersive effect without excessive grogginess. Products like our LITQUID 6-Pack are formulated with this range in mind.
Experienced users: 20mg+ THC
Reserved for those with significant tolerance. At this level, effects are strong and long-lasting — not a good starting point for anyone newer to edibles, regardless of how experienced they are with smoking.
A note on Delta-8 vs. Delta-9 dosing
Delta-8 THC is generally milder than Delta-9 at the same milligram count, so if you're trying a Delta-8 product, it's reasonable to start slightly higher within a given tier. Full comparison here: Delta-9 vs. Delta-8: What's the Difference.
Practical tips for accurate dosing
- Read the label every time. Milligram content varies by product and even by flavor — never assume two products dose the same.
- Split gummies for smaller doses. Most gummies are scored for easy division if you want to start below the labeled serving.
- Eat something first. A completely empty stomach can intensify and speed up absorption unpredictably — a light meal beforehand tends to produce a more even experience.
- Track what works for you. Everyone's ideal dose is different based on body weight, metabolism, and tolerance. Keep notes on what dose and product gave you the experience you wanted.
What if you take too much?
If you've overdone it, the most important thing to know is that THC overconsumption, while deeply uncomfortable, is not medically dangerous the way alcohol overconsumption can be. Find a comfortable, safe space, stay hydrated, and know that the effects will pass — usually within a few hours. If you have any medical concerns, contact a healthcare provider or poison control.
Start with clearly labeled products
Every Ganja Eats product lists exact milligram content per serving — no guessing, no vague "strength" labels. Browse the full menu at chefmattonline.com/collections/all, or start with our First Timer Box if you're dosing for the first time.
