Delta-9 vs. Delta-8 THC: What's the Difference and Which Is Right for You?

Walk into any cannabis-adjacent shop and you'll see both Delta-9 and Delta-8 on the shelf, often in similar-looking packaging. They're related compounds, but the experience they produce — and their legal status — can be meaningfully different. Here's what actually separates them.

For the full basics on edibles before diving into cannabinoid types, start with our Complete Beginner's Guide to Cannabis Edibles.

What is Delta-9 THC?

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol is the primary psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant — it's what most people mean when they say "THC." It's the most extensively studied cannabinoid and tends to produce a stronger, clearer, more euphoric effect.

What is Delta-8 THC?

Delta-8 THC is a naturally occurring but minor cannabinoid, chemically similar to Delta-9 but with one double bond in a different position on its molecular chain. That small structural difference is enough to change how it binds to your body's cannabinoid receptors — resulting in an effect users commonly describe as smoother, more relaxing, and less likely to trigger anxiety or paranoia at higher doses.

Key differences at a glance

Potency: Delta-9 is generally considered 1.5 to 2 times stronger than Delta-8 at an equivalent milligram dose. If you're used to Delta-9, a Delta-8 product at the same mg count will likely feel milder.

Effect profile: Delta-9 tends toward energetic, euphoric, and cerebral. Delta-8 tends toward calm, body-focused relaxation. Neither is "better" — it depends on what you're looking for.

Onset and duration: Both follow the same edible timing rules — see our onset timing guide for a full breakdown by product format.

Legal status: This is where things get more complicated. Delta-9 THC derived from hemp (containing less than 0.3% Delta-9 by dry weight) is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill, though individual states have added their own restrictions. Delta-8 sits in a legal gray area in several states, with some banning it outright. We track current state-by-state status in our Delta-9 legality guide — always confirm before ordering to your state.

Which should you choose?

Choose Delta-9 if: you want a stronger, more classic THC effect, or you're an experienced user looking for a familiar high.

Choose Delta-8 if: you're sensitive to anxiety from THC, prefer a milder body-relaxed feeling, or are looking for something gentler for daytime use.

Dosing considerations for each

Because Delta-9 is roughly 1.5–2x stronger, dosing guidance differs slightly between the two. Our full milligram breakdown — including starting doses by experience level — applies primarily to Delta-9 products: How to Dose THC Edibles. If you're trying Delta-8 for the first time, it's reasonable to start at the higher end of a given dosing tier since the effect will likely be milder than the same mg of Delta-9.
